Cooking is an excellent tool for melee characters to reduce downtime and provide moderate duration buffs.  While it might be overlooked by mana-centric classes, no one who stands on the front lines should fail to consider it.  Hungry pets eating you out of house and home?  Look no farther.  As a secondary profession it won't interfere with your other trade skills, and is the perfect complement to fishing.<br>

*One of the secondary Tradeskills, it allows a character to create cooked food out of raw ingredients, which can be used to heal health loss after a fight is over, or to feed a pet or critter. Some food created by the cooking skill provides a temporary stat buff after a character has spent long enough sitting and eating the food.

To start your career as a chef, talk to a cooking trainer located in any major city.  Press "P", find your cooking icon, and if you have the ingredients you can cook at any fire.  I never carry flint, tinder, or wood, as inventory space will always be at a premium - there are plenty of fires in any town, and even field cooking using fires in mobs' camps is highly feasible.  You will learn a few recipes that use random drops from beasts near your level, but to really get started I recommend cooking in conjuction with fishing. Buy a recipe for brilliant smallfish and head to a noob fishing hole (as described here).  I start all my horde cooks at Bloodhoof Village in Mulgore, which has a fishing trainer (west of town by the lake), cooking trainer, a vendor who sells the first several freshwater fish recipes, and a lake which provides lots of brillant smallfish and longjaw mud snappers.

At level 30 if your Cooking skill is stuck between 90 and 150 get the Murloc Fin Soup recipe and massacre the Murlocs in Baradin Bay (Menethil Harbor) for their fins. They spawn quickly and are not social like other Murlocs, so they don't gang up on you.
An Expert Cookbook may be purchased from Wulan in Desolace or Shandrina in Ashenvale. Since you probably blew through apprentise and journeyman fairly quickly, this is where you'll slow down and decide your own path to culinary excellence.  Many recipes start at 175 cooking skill, meaning 150-175 is about the slowest time in your career.  For fishermen I recommend sticking with bristle whisker catfish which can be fished about 65% of the time from freshwater in Ashenvale.  Horde characters should leave Orgrimmar via the barrens exit, cross the bridge then immediately turn right and follow the river up a bit. Also try to get your hands on some tangy clam meat (from sea fishing, Ratchet docks are a favorite for horde), which will power you to 175 as well as privide a nice stam/spirit buff.  Once you've hit 175, a whole new world of recipes opens up, including several different kinds of fish.  If you quest in Arathi, pick up all that raptor meat and turn it into roast raptor.  Personally, once I hit 175 I made 225 about 10 mintues later from all the recipes and meats I had saved.

If you are at or around level 35 (Alliance), and have a cooking skill of 150, the easiest way to take it all the way to 200 is to get the tasty lion steak recipe A Costly Menace from Southshore, and then farm the lions at Gavins Naze (Alterac Mountains northwest of Southshore) for lion meat. You will need 100 pieces of lion meat to gain 50 points in cooking. I found it worth the while for the XP, and the bristly whiskers that drop sell for 7 silver each.

This is basically a how-to guide on going back and leveling up your Cooking skill after neglecting it the entire game, like myself.  As the title suggests, this guide is Horde-specific since I have not played an Alliance character.  Thus, I will have to rely on the knowledge and abilities of another person to provide that information.

The basic trick to leveling Cooking from 1 -> 226 (more on that later) in fewer than two hours is to understand that you only need to kill six different mob types to get there.  When most people skill up a lagging secondary skill, they inevitably spend their time needlessly trying to skill up either too much on “almost greys” or exclusively on oranges and some yellows.  Also, it is critical to realize when you can gather mobs close together for multiple purposes AND find ones close to towns, flight points, zeppelins, etc.  The key is a combination of loads of the same thing with fast access.

 +

 +
That being said, here’s your route:
 +

 +
#Start in Orgrimmar and learn the Cooking skill. Ask a guard if you don’t know where the trainer is. Make sure you learn the Boar Meat recipe.
 +
#Leave Orgrimmar from the main (south) gate and proceed to kill every boar and scorpion in sight. Just weave your way south on the western side of the road working your way towards Razor Hill.
 +
#Buy the Scorpid Surprise recipe when you reach Razor Hill.
 +
#Cook all of your boar pieces until you get to 25-30 skill.  Once you’re depleted, start cooking your scorpid pieces until you get to 50.
 +
#Weave your way back up to Orgrimmar, killing boars and scorpions until you’re assured of getting 50+ skill points from cooking them.
 +
#Visit the trainer and buy the Journeyman Cooking skill.
 +
#Fly to XR (aka Crossroads) from Orgrimmar and buy the Strider Stew and Crispy Lizard Tail recipes from the supply vendors there (General and Trade Supply vendors near the flight master).
 +
#Just outside XR is a flock of striders so plentiful that you should be able to get 4-5 stacks within minutes.  Get a few stacks and head back to the inn in XR.
 +
#Buy apples from the innkeeper and cook all your strider meat.
 +
#Repeat strider exercise until 100 skill is achieved.  Buy 50 Hot Spices before leaving XR.
 +
#Head south towards Camp T (aka Camp Taurajo) and kill every Thunderhead/Stormhide/Stormsnout thing along the way.  You’ll start seeing them on the west side of the road just south of the bridge over the dried up riverbed.
 +
#Collect about 2.5 stacks and cook them to at least 130 skill.  (You should get at least 130, maybe 135 or even 140 if you’re lucky.)
 +
#Use the new flight master in Camp T (woot!) to fly to TB (aka Thunder Bluff)and then on to Shadowprey Village.
 +
#Buy the Expert Cookbook from Wulan in Desolace.  Read it and head back to Orgrimmar.
 +
#Take the Zeppelin to Grom’gol and buy both the Curiously Tasty Omelet and Roast Raptor recipes from Nerrist, the Trade Goods vendor.
 +
#Round up all the raptors within 100 yards of GG, just north of the town.  Circle around and kill them all; 3-4 sweeps should be good enough.
 +
#Cook all the eggs first to at least 175-180 or so skill and then cook the raptor meat to 225.  STOP AT EXACTLY 225.  Ensure you have at least another 5 or so raptor meat and have 225 skill before leaving.
 +
#Head back to Orgrimmar.
 +
#Visit the Auction House and buyout 10 Zesty Clam meat.  (Trust me, it’s cheap compared to the time you’ll spend trying to farm it.) Cantororion: If for some reason you don't want to buy them from AH, (none on auction/don't wanna spend money) set course for Revantusk Village, on the Hinterlands and farm them from the Snapjaws outside of the village. The drop rate is not the best there is, but you just might be able to scrap enough here.
 +
#Fly to 1K (aka Thousand Needles) and buy 20 Alterac Swiss Cheese from the innkeeper.
 +
#Fly to Gadget (aka Gadgetzan) and talk to Dirge Quickcleave in the inn there.  Get the quest he has for you.
 +
#Head south out of Gadget and generally wiggle your way south killing all the Roc-type mobs along the way.  Head back to Gadget once you have the 12 eggs.
 +
#Turn in the quest with Dirge and get the Master Cooking skill.
 +
#(This bug has been fixed: I've tested it - KurganXXL)  Used to be 'Extremely Important' – Before you leave Gadget, go over to the bonfire behind the inn and cook enough raptor meat to get at least one skillup.  You cannot leave Tanaris or quit the game without getting above 225, or you will be stuck there at 225 forever.

Congrats!  You’re basically done.

From here on out, you should be able to grind spiders and make Spider Sausage nearly all the way to 300.  At this point, you’ll want to collect recipes that enhance your primary class traits and grind those mats accordingly.  You’ll eventually reach 300 skill without any concerted effort via this habitual grinding process.  If you run into problems at around skill 260 or so (that’s when the Spider Sausage skillups really slow down), then you might want to kit the fishing suppliers in places like Desolace, Hinterlands and so on for recipes there and fish enough mats to get you over 275.  At 275, virtually every recipe is available to you and farming materials for the specific ones you want will be up to you.

Alternate route to 150 via Fishing by Malaclypse:
 +

 +
If you're skilling Fishing while skilling Cooking, you might as well kill both with one stone.
 +
Raw Brilliant Smallfish are a very common catch at Bloodhoof Village in Mulgore, and in the Burning Blade Coven cave in the Den. Fish up 3 stacks and you'll get from 1 to 50 Cooking easily. The recipe is available in Thunder Bluff. Grab the Longjaw Mud Snapper recipe too. Train to Journeyman Cooking.
 +

 +

 +
Take the raw Longjaw Mud Snapper you got in the newbie fishing zone, and fish up some more in Orgrimmar so you have 3 stacks or so. Cook up to 100+ Cooking.
 +

 +

 +
Bristle Whisker Catfish is your next recipe. You'll have some from Orgrimmar fishing, but it is very common at Sun Rock Retreat in Stonetalon - so get your 3 stacks there. The recipe is available at Crossroads. These will take you to 150 Cooking. Grab the Expert Cookbook from Shadowprey Village and head to Dustwallow Marsh. The butcher in town there sells a recipe for Heavy Crocolisk Stew, a nice 8 Stamina/Spirit buff food.

1 If you eat for 10 seconds
 +

 +

 +
*Freshwater vs saltwater is a general guideline, as there seems to be some crossover (for example, the Veiled Sea seems to be stocked with freshwater fish)
 +
*Expect some high level areas to expand as more people start fishing in 50+ zones
 +
*Soft-Shell Clams aren't included, as they're a quest item (no associated recipe)
 +
*Giant-Clam Scorcho doesn't appear because you can't fish for Giant-Clams
 +
*Booty Bay is in Stranglethorn Vale
 +
*Steamwheedle Port is in Tanaris
