Rune Words can be made by setting specific runes in the correct order and normal or superior item type with the exact number of sockets required to complete the word, adding Rune Word properties to those of the individual runes. The names of socketed normal or superior items are displayed in grey text, so they cannot be distinguished from ethereal items dropped in Expansion games until picked up (although an item can be both socketed and ethereal, as in this case). Only the following item types can be socketed, with the maximum sockets varying for different item types: Helm Circlet Pelt Primal helm Body armor Weapon 1 Shield Auric shield Shrunken head Grimoire 3 3 3 3 4 6 4 4 2 2 1 Excluding throwing weapons Number of sockets can vary depending on the following: Item quality Difficulty level in which normal or superior item drops Item type and level Specific item Maximum sockets of any item is limited to the lowest maximum allowed by all of the above. Items dropped can have the following number of sockets, depending on their quality: Quality Low Normal Superior Magic Rare Crafted Set Unique Sockets 0 (0-6) (0-6) (0-4) (0-2) (0-2) (0-4) (0-5) Low quality items do not drop socketed. Normal and superior items dropped in Normal can have up to 3 sockets, while those dropped in Nightmare can have up to 4 sockets and those dropped in Hell can have up to 6 sockets. Magic socketed weapons created using the Horadric Cube always have (1-2) sockets. Magic, rare and crafted items with the Mechanist's prefix can have (1-2) sockets; magic items with the Artisan's prefix can have up to 3 sockets, while those with the Jeweler's prefix can have up to 4 sockets. Set and Unique items are not normally socketed, but those listed below on this page have them as a modifier. If an item is already socketed, then there is no way to increase or decrease the number of sockets. However, in Expansion games normal (not low or superior) items without sockets can be socketed using the Horadric Cube, while Larzuk will add maximum sockets to an eligible item of any quality (including low) as reward for stopping the Siege on Harrogath. Consult individual item type pages for maximum sockets for specific items. Larzuk will put (1-2) sockets in a magic item, and just one socket in a rare, crafted, Set or Unique item without sockets. A rare item can be socketed using the Horadric Cube, adding one socket (this is the only way to put a socket in a rare item in a Classic game). Items put in a socketed item can be removed using the Horadric Cube in Expansion games. However, gems, jewels and runes are destroyed upon removal.
