The attack speed displayed by the game doesn't really give enough information about the actual speed at which attacks are occurring. The game actually specifies speed as the number of frames of animation it takes to complete the attack. The game runs at 25 frames per second (at least the logic does), therefore, as an example, a 10 frame attack would translate to 2.5 attacks per second.
Because of this discreet nature of speed, there isn't a one to one correspondence between the increased attack speed (IAS) percentage and the effective speed increase. The tables below, often referred to as breakpoints, show at what percentage of IAS gives a change in attack speed.
Bow Normal Attack Breakpoints
This section lists the breakpoints for a normal attack using a bow. These tables hold for all attacks other the strafe (elemental, magic, guided, multi, etc).

Bow Strafe Breakpoints
This section lists the breakpoints for a strafe attack using a bow.
The first number is the number of frames needed to shoot the first arrow plus the number of frames needed to finish up the strafe animation. Because of how the animation process works, this is not the same as the number of frames needed to do a normal attack.
The second number means the number of frames needed to shoot every arrow that comes after the first arrow.

Some Notes on the Notation
The second number means the same thing as before: the number of frames needed to shoot every arrow that comes after the first arrow.
The first number means something slightly different now. It is actually the number of frames needed to shoot the first arrow + the number of frames needed to finish up the strafe animation. Because of how the animation process works, this is not the same as the number of frames needed to do a normal attack.
Some specific notes on some crossbow strafe speed grades:
- XX/4.5 Strafe and xx/3.5 Strafe speeds: The 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th arrows take 1 frames longer to shoot. For example, in a 16/4.5 Strafe, the second strafe arrow takes 5 frames and the third arrow takes 4 frames.
- 18/5b Strafe, 14/4b Strafe: The second arrow fired in the volley takes one less frame to shoot, but the finishing animation is 1 frame longer.
- 15/4b Strafe: The first arrow takes one less frame to shoot, but the finishing animation takes 1 frame longer.
- (14/13)/4 Strafe: The second arrow in the volley takes one frame less to shoot. The finishing animation is 14 frames long when shooting two strafe arrows.
- 15.5/4.5 Strafe: The finishing animation takes 1 frame longer when shooting a total of 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 Strafe arrows.
- 11.5/3.5 Strafe: The finishing animation takes 1 frame longer when shooting a total of 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 Strafe arrows.
