Your Faction Standings decide how liked you are by a certain faction or group. Certain quests require you to have a high enough standing with a faction. Some NPC's won't talk or trade with you until you have a high enough standing. Collecting standing points will improve your standing. You can gather these points by doing Quests.
You can find your different faction standings in your character screen (press k).
