Inscription is a new profession introduced with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Inscriptionists create items, called glyphs, which can be used to augment a character's powers. These glyphs are added to a special tab on the character's Talent interface window. Each character can have three major glyphs and three minor glyphs at level 80.

Inscription is unusual because a character cannot just learn all the recipes of their trade through class trainers and item drops, but also has an skill called "Minor Inscription Research", which has a 20 hour cooldown. This means that it will take a minimum of 1200 hours (or 50 days) to learn every minor glyph.

Inscriptionists use herbs to create the basic ingredients for their wares. A stack of five herbs is milled to create a pigment.

Inscription in Classic WoW

Inscription trainers are found by Alliance characters in Darnassus, The Exodar, Ironforge, and Stormwind, while Horde characters find inscription trainers in Orgrimmar, Silvermoon City, Thunder Bluff, and Undercity.

A player can become an Apprentice Inscriptionist and begin creating items with formulas in Classic WoW at Level 5. Apprentice Inscriptionists can learn formulas up to 75 skill.

A player can become a Journeyman Inscriptionist and begin creating items with formulas in Classic WoW at Level 10, with an inscription skill of 50. Journeyman Inscriptionists can learn formulas up to 150 skill.

A player can become an Expert Inscriptionist and begin creating items with formulas in Classic WoW at Level 20, with an inscription skill of 125. Expert Inscriptionists can learn formulas up to 225 skill.

A player can become an Artisan Inscriptionist and begin creating items with formulas in Classic WoW at Level 35, with an inscription skill of 200. Artisan Inscriptionists can learn formulas up to 300 skill.

Inscription in The Burning Crusade

A player can become a Master Inscriptionist and begin creating items with formulas from the Burning Crusades expansion at Level 50, with an inscription skill of 275. Inscription trainers are found in Hellfire Peninsula at Honor Hold (Alliance) and Thrallmar (Horde), and in Shattrath City at Scryer's and Aldor's Tiers . Master Inscriptionists can learn patterns up to 375 skill.

Inscription in Wrath of the Lich King

A player can become a Grand Master Inscriptionist and begin creating items with formulas from the Wrath of the Lich King expansion at Level 65, with an inscription skill of 350. Inscription trainers are found in the Borean Tundra at Valiance Keep (Alliance) and Warsong Hold (Horde), in Howling Fjord at Valgarde (Alliance) and Vengeance Landing (Horde), in Dalaran at the Magus Commerce Exchange, and in Icecrown at the Argent Tournament. Grand Master Inscriptionists can learn patterns up to 450 skill.
