Overlay when life is returned.
Mana damage reduces a player character's mana rather than life. If the monster is not at maximum life, healing equivalent to final mana damage to the character is applied. No other units have mana, so healing only applies when attacking player character and it is limited by current mana: a character with no mana takes no mana damage, and thus no healing is applied. - Damage Taken Goes to Mana is applied before mana damage, so it can only counter mana damage when equal or greater mana is returned beforehand and mana damage does not reduce mana to zero. For example, if 200 mana can be returned before 200 mana damage is applied then the net result is no change; however, if the player had 200 maximum mana then this would be reduced to zero. [3]
- Critical hits do not double mana damage. [4]
- Difficulty level penalties to resistance apply, so mana damage is 40% higher in Nightmare and 100% higher in Hell Expansion games (or 20% and 50% higher respectively in Classic games).. [5]
- Only a Sorceress' Energy Shield can reduce mana damage. For example, level 20 ES with 20 points in Telekinesis would result in 100 base mana damage being reduced to 25, then 75% of 75 (56.25) is redirected to mana, resulting in just 81.25 (25+56.25) mana lost instead of 100; in Hell, the Resist -100% penalty increases mana damage from 25 to 50, resulting in just 106.25 (50+56.25) mana lost instead of 200 (ES mana loss is applied before final mana damage). - The following monsters have a chance to apply mana damage with their melee attacks, increasing by 6.25% (1/16) in Nightmare and Hell with each additional player in a Ladder or Single Player game:

- For example, a level 85 Burning Soul in the Throne of Destruction in Hell has 90% chance of applying 192-288 base mana damage with its melee attack, doubled to 384-576 by the Resist -100% penalty; in an eight-player Ladder or Single Player game, this increases to 276-414 base mana damage, doubled to 552-828 by the Resist -100% penalty.
