Values last verified 5/15/2005. These are descriptions told to a Level 1 Paladin by the class trainer. Keep in mind that adding Talents may affect descriptions. A reputation of Honored or above with the class trainer's faction will lower costs by 10%.

Flash of Light

Flash of Light has a 1.5 second casting time.

Paladin Healing Analysis

This analysis is for Paladin healing at level 60. Blessing of Light at top rank increases the effect of Holy Light by 400 and the effect of Flash of Light by 115. Holy Light receives 71.4% of the maximum benefit of "by up to" +Healing items while Flash of Light receives 42.9% of the maximum benefit. So, while we do get the number listed for Blessing of Light, we can never get the maximum number listed on "by up to" +Healing items...even if it's plate. (See Plus Damage and Plus Healing Items.)

Cast time, amount healed, and mana cost are explicitly listed in spell descriptions. Hitpoints per mana (HPM) and Hitpoints per second (HPS) are two other useful numbers derived from the explicit description. HPM is healing efficiency. HPS is healing speed. Think of HPS as something like DPS in that it grabs aggro. As you'll see, Paladin HPS is a lot lower than Priest HPS which explains why we don't get a lot of aggro from healing even though we might like it.

From this it should be clear that Holy Light heals faster, but has less efficiency than Flash of Light. Blessing of Light makes a huge impact which pays back its mana cost with just one Holy Light or a few Flashes of Light. Plus, it raises healing speed. Blessing of Light has the effect of "up to 560" +Healing gear for Holy Light or "up to 268" +Healing gear for Flash of Light. +Healing gear makes a bigger impact on Flash of Light because of its lower starting numbers, even scaled for cast time.

How do Talents affect this? With 3 Talents into Improved Holy Light, that spell's healing effect is increased by 12% (to 1425-1584, which is oddly a 14.2% increase). With 3 Talents into Improved Flash of Light, that spell's mana cost is reduced by 12% (to 123). This further divides the spells into one for speed (HPS) and the other for efficiency (HPM).
