The time has come to hunt down and destroy Diablo, himself.
But beware, the Lord of Terror is not to be underestimated. He single-handedly destroyed the town of Tristram and corrupted the last noble hero who tried to stop him.
This time, you must defeat him for good. Only by destroying the Soulstone which he carries will his spirit be banished forever.
Good luck! Though this be our darkest hour, it may yet be your greatest moment.

Navigation
- If Hell's Forge has been completed, talking to Hadriel prompts the following:
Proceed, hero, into Terror's lair.
Know that Diablo's innermost sanctum is hidden by five seals.
Only by opening each of these seals can you clear your way to the final battle.
- Hadriel
- If Hell's Forge has not been completed, talking to him prompts the following:
Halt! Before venturing into Diablo's lair, go to the Hellforge with Mephisto's Soulstone.
Place the stone on the Hellforge and use the Hellforge Hammer to destroy it.
- Hadriel
- Despite this warning, Hell's Forge does not need to be completed beforehand: presumably Mephisto's Soulstone would then be destroyed at same time as Diablo's Soulstone (and player would receive stern lecture about dangers of overconfidence), but there is no deviation in storyline or cinematic.
- Remainder of River of Flame extends beyond Hadriel to northeast, where Chaos Sanctuary can be found. Best to proceed up left side, as paths on right side often double back on themselves.
Objective
- There is very limited variation in layout of Chaos Sanctuary, and it is always populated by the same monster types:
- Continue northeast to center of Chaos Sanctuary, where a huge pentagram is found. Five seals mentioned by Hadriel can be found in three remaining arms of Sanctuary:
Grand Vizier of Chaos is an Extra Strong Fire Enchanted Super Unique Storm Caster which is Immune to Fire in Normal (135%) and Nightmare (150%), but Immune to Lightning (100%) in Hell. Accompanied by nine minions in Normal, ten in Nightmare and eleven in Hell.
|
Lord De Seis is an Extra Strong Aura Enchanted (always with Fanaticism) Super Unique Oblivion Knight which is always Immune to Cold in Hell (180%). Accompanied by five Doom Knight minions in Normal, six in Nightmare and seven in Hell.
|
Infector of Souls is an Extra Fast Spectral Hit Super Unique Venom Lord which is always Immune to Poison (100%) in Nightmare but Immune to Fire (130%) in Hell. Accompanied by nine minions in Normal, ten in Nightmare and eleven in Hell.
|
- Variation in layout of left and right arms indicates which seal will spawn Super Unique:
- If left arm turns to right, first seal is trapped; if left arm is forked, seal in right fork is trapped.
- If right arm is straight with seals in alcoves to either side, first seal on right is trapped; if right arm turns back on itself, seal at its end is trapped.
- It is good etiquette to warn nearby players before opening trapped seals to prevent unintentional deaths, and to avoid opening seals which are not trapped until all trapped seals have been opened and their Super Unique monsters killed.
- Most dangerous scenario is when right arm turns back on itself and seal at its end is trapped: although they don't spawn in immediate vicinity and attack immediately, Infector of Souls and minions block retreat, and due to their numbers and size it can become impossible to retreat, resulting in being overwhelmed.
- Lord De Seis may not cast Iron Maiden from patch 1.13 onwards, but damage enhancements of his guaranteed Unique bonuses combined with Decrepify or Amplify Damage can make his Doom Knight minions extremely dangerous en masse. Try to lure them beyond aura and curse-casting range to diminish threat, or kill him first.
- All five seals must be opened and all three Super Unique monsters (but not their minions) must be killed before Diablo will come forth. Once this has been done, all other remaining monsters and minions will die, screen will shake and Diablo will spawn on pentagram at center of Chaos Sanctuary.
- If an allied player has already completed quest in a previous game, at least one player who hasn't must be within ~ one screen length when Diablo dies to complete quest: all other players may remain in town and still complete quest.
- When being rushed, low-level characters often hide behind two outcroppings in the wall directly above where Diablo spawns: if he does not move, low-level characters will be shielded from his attacks, while still being close enough to complete quest.
Reward
Praise be to the Light! You have accomplished the impossible!
Diablo and Mephisto have been banished back into the Black Abyss that spawned them, and the corrupted Soulstones are no more.
However, while you were fighting here, Baal remained behind in the mortal realm, building an army of hellish minions. Now, Baal's army is searching for the Worldstone, the ancient source of all the Soulstones and their power, while leaving behind a wake of destruction. They have forged deeply into the Barbarian homelands, heading directly for the summit of Mount Arreat!
Baal knows, mortal hero! That is the very site of the blessed Worldstone!
Now, enter the portal I have opened for you. It will take you to the Barbarian city of Harrogath, the last bastion of Order on the slopes of Arreat.
- Tyrael
- Portal allows access to Act 5 by transporting player to Harrogath.
- In Classic games, defeating Diablo causes game to end in 90 seconds, giving little time to collect items dropped or return to talk to Tyrael:
Praise be to the Light! You have accomplished the impossible!
Diablo and Mephisto have been banished back into the Black Abyss that spawned them and the corrupted Soulstones are no more.
You've done well, hero. For now, you should rejoice.
