Poison damage overlay

Poison Damage normally causes a target to turn green when poisoned, a state which stops damage regeneration and can apply poison damage over the state's length. However, if cold length or Holy Freeze are also applied then the target remains or turns blue.

  • Damage of multiple types can be applied by the same attack, but only one damage overlay is displayed at a time: this means that poison damage can still be applied even if the only overlay displayed is for fire, lightning or cold damage.
  • It is not added to Smite or Lightning Bolt.
  • While damage is displayed in points and length in seconds, both are calculated and applied using more precise units of measurement: each point is divided into 1/256ths, while each second is divided into 25 frames. [1]
  • Targets are poisoned if as little as 1/256 poison damage is applied per frame.
  • Poison damage is displayed as the total damage applied over its length, but it's calculated by applying its 1/256 damage rate for a specified number of frames: a Toxic Small Charm applies poison damage at a rate of 205/256 for 125 frames, which is displayed as 100 Poison Damage Over 5 Seconds (125 * 205/256 over 125/25).
  • Poison damage from multiple attacks doesn't sum: if a target is already poisoned, then the rate and length of that poison will be overwritten by that of any subsequent attack which has an equal or greater rate. Rates are compared after all modifiers have been applied. [2]
  • When player, mercenary or pet applies poison to a poisoned monster, their poison is applied for one frame instead of the current poison: if their poison has an equal or greater rate, it then overwrites the current poison and it gets applied for its length; if their poison has a lower rate, the current poison then continues for its remaining length. Rates are compared after all modifiers have been applied. More generally, poison damage does not get applied in frames in which any damage from other sources is applied (although poison and Open Wounds both apply simultaneously). [3] [4]
    • In online modes (LoD and D2R, Expansion and Classic, LD and NLD) any damage from other source stops poison damage for additional 7 frames after taking damage. Builds relying on poison damage should refrain from utilizing other damage sources, such as Raise Skeleton. This mechanic is also applied to damage regeneration.[5]
  • When using Whirlwind while equipping two weapons with the same attack rate against a single target (which can result in poison damage being applied by both attacks in the same frame), each attack applies one frame of its poison damage, then the highest rate is applied for its remaining length. When equal rates are applied, the length of the last is applied (whichever is the secondary weapon for that attack check). [6]
  • When monsters apply poison to a player, mercenary or pet, their poison is applied for one frame as well as the current poison: if their poison has an equal or greater rate, it then overwrites the current poison and it gets applied for its length; if their poison has a lower rate, the current poison then continues for its remaining length. Rabies and Poison Creeper can also apply additional frames of poison damage when applied to more than one monster.
  • Poison damage can kill monsters, mercenaries and pets but will only reduce players to 1 life (although poison damage from a subsequent attack would kill them if they remained on 1 life). [7]


Item

If a single item has both a prefix and a suffix applying poison damage, then the rates and lengths of both are simply added. [8]

  • 853 188/256 (234 * 934/256) poison damage over 9.36 ( [704/3] /25) seconds is applied (values are rounded down to the nearest 1/256 and frame). Gems, jewels and runes all count as separate items, even if they're socketed in a single item. [10]
  • Length is calculated differently when multiple items applying poison damage are used with skills that apply less than 100% weapon damage.

Skill

  • Skill level is set when the player uses the skill: adding or removing skill bonuses won't have any effect on rate or length if there's a delay between using the skill and applying poison damage.
  • While skills are normally treated as separate sources of poison damage whose rates (and accompanying lengths) compete with those of other skills and items, Poison Dagger and the javelins (but not the clouds) of Poison Javelin and Plague Javelin combine skill damage rate with any item rates added to attack damage; the length for which this combined rate is applied is calculated by summing skill and item lengths, and dividing by the number of items. Venom's length does not override those of the skills Poison Dagger, Poison Javelin and Plague Javelin. Casting Venom can thus significantly increase the rate applied by these skills while not reducing length. Since Venom effectively creates a single source which sums the rates of Venom and items but which only applies for Venom's length, the length is the sum of the skill length and that of Venom. [18]

  • Ideally damage is calculated measuring rate in 1/256ths and length in frames. It's also possible to calculate damage measuring rate in poison damage/second and length in seconds. However, the result will only be an approximation and rounding down should only be done at the end of the calculation for maximum accuracy.
  • If a single item has both a prefix and a suffix applying poison damage, then the rates and lengths of both are simply added.
  • Gems, jewels and runes all count as separate items, even if they're socketed in a single item.
  • Item and Venom rate are only added to the skill rates of Poison Dagger and the javelins (but not the clouds) of Poison Javelin and Plague Javelin. Character screen does not display total poison damage correctly when skill, item and Venom rates combine: it correctly calculates total poison damage from items and Venom, but then simply adds this to skill damage.
  • +% PSD isn't applied to item and Venom rate when applied by ranged attacks.
  • Length is calculated differently when multiple items applying poison damage are used with skills that apply less than 100% weapon damage.
    • Poison length = [sum of lengths / (sources - 1) ]
    • Poison length = sum of lengths
      • Blade Sentinel using two-handed weapon
      • Blade Fury using two-handed weapon
