You have quite a treasure there in that Horadric Cube. - Deckard Cain
Horadric Cube is an item needed to complete the Horadric Staff in Act 2 and Khalim's Will in Act 3. It is first found in a chest guarded by Bloodwitch the Wild in the Halls of the Dead Level 3 in Act 2; alternatively, it will drop from the second Super Unique Council Member killed in Travincal in Act 3 for any player character that does not already have one in inventory or stash. However, each player character can only pick up one.
- It requires 2x2 inventory space to pick up. Once in inventory or stash, right click to open its window on the left half of the screen: it has 3x4 inventory space of its own.
- Items can also be placed in it by left clicking on them, dragging them over it and releasing them: they will be moved inside as long as there is enough space.
- It can be emptied quickly by dropping it: its contents will be moved to inventory, provided there is enough space (otherwise, remaining content is dropped as well).
- Deckard Cain can identify items stored inside.
- Aside from extra storage, it can be used to create new items (including crafted items in Expansion games) or portals, or socket, upgrade, repair or recharge existing items. Simply place the required input items inside, then left click on the Transmute button for the desired output. Any incorrect or extra input items will prevent them being transmuted.
Horadric Cube is stored in inventory (or stash), then a right click opens its window to the left and any items within can be transmuted if they match the input listed for any of the formulae on this page, or the crafted item pages.
- Any formula which requires any rune as input is obviously Expansion only.
- Ladder formulae are also available in Single Player and Open games.

1 Excluding throwing weapons
Since output normal items are only ilvl 1, these formulae can be used to create items with tiers 1-2 staff mods (particularly claws, since those that can have staff mods are normally too high in level to have tiers 1-2). They can also be used to restrict the maximum number of sockets the item can receive.
Magic item
This Expansion only formula creates a magic item of the same item type and item level as the input item.

1 Excluding throwing weapons
- Although 1-6 sockets are added, the number of sockets is restricted by item type, item level and specific item. For example, body armor can have maximum 4 sockets, ilvl < 26 body armor can have maximum 3 sockets, while any Splint Mail can have maximum 2 sockets: this means any Splint Mail has 1/6 chance of 1 socket and 5/6 chance of 2 sockets (2-6 sockets, restricted to 2).
- Ethereal armor applies the ethereal defense bonus a second time to output: for example, normal Sacred Armor has (487-600) base defense so ethereal Sacred Armor has (730-900), but after socketing it will have (1,095-1,350). This can be (ab)used to create Rune Word armor with extremely high defense: for example, a Prudence body armor's (140-170)% Enhanced Defense would result in (2,628-3,645) defense when made in the socketed ethereal Sacred Armor.
Rare item
This is the only way to add a socket to a rare item in Classic games. If an item cannot have sockets, this will not add them.

- Base item type is upgraded. An ethereal rare armor or weapon will remain ethereal (including an ethereal Crystal Sword or Dimensional Blade upgraded to Phase Blade), and any sockets or gems, jewels or runes in those sockets will also remain.
- Required level increases are cumulative, so a rare item upgraded from Normal to Exceptional, then Exceptional to Elite will have Required Level +12 (5+7).
- Although armor with Enhanced Defense normally has base defense set to its maximum value + 1 (added before any ethereal bonus), upgraded armor with Enhanced Defense has its base defense value randomly selected again.
- Upgraded ethereal items are set to the maximum Durability of the base Exceptional or Elite item. For example, when ethereal Mesh Armor (Durability [45/2] + 1 or 23) is upgraded to Boneweave, it now has maximum Durability 45.
